A Day’s Drive →
I simply couldn’t make the entire drive by myself. So I invited everyone I knew, via Twitter and Facebook, to join in. An experiment, recapped.
A Day’s View, Alabama
Last week I drove from Washington, DC to New Orleans, LA. One day. 18.5 hours. 1,108 miles. Give or take a couple miles, of course.
I wasn’t planning on driving the entire way in one shot: I just wanted to make it pretty far, to...
#RocktheSpill with the Gulf Coast Benefit Concert... →
Shortly after the Gulf oil spill happened, I asked what will we do?, a call for each one of us to think about how we’ll give back. Here’s one way for everyone one of you to give back: announcing a series of benefit concerts across the USA on July 1st to benefit the people and wildlife affected by the Gulf Oil Spill, called Gulf Coast Benefit Presents Coast to Coast. Attend, donate, get...

Some didn’t have high hopes for CEPIC this year.
But I did. I was excited about the opportunity to meet a lot of industry professionals that I know only by name, email address or avatar. I was excited to participate in a...

I have a pretty strict 10 slide rule in presentations I give regarding consulting gigs. There’s always more info that ends up in a longer deck, but the killer 10 slide deck is the best way to deliver key findings, analysis and decisions.

Is Flickr’s new “Request to License” feature via Getty Images a big deal? For Flickr, it’s a feature that aids their competitive positioning. For Getty, it just adds to their efforts to bring more images to the market. For a photographer, it’s just the chance to make money where there was really no chance before, without any extra effort. And that’s fine. It is what it is.

Why we create without getting paid (and why it’s... →
Why do people spend time creating without getting paid? Three big reasons, in my mind: 1) creating is a form of entertainment, 2) it’s never been easier to create and publish for free, and 3) creating creates real options. We can say yes without having to convince anyone else to say yes. And it’s great. But shifting from free to paid isn’t as easy as we may expect.
