We are incredibly proud and thrilled to announce that Fitocracy is joining the 500startups accelerator program. Starting in mid October, the team will spend the rest of the year out in Mountain View, CA to focus on building out Fitocracy even faster while receiving mentorship from some of the tech industry’s most talented and recognized individuals.

The past several months have been quite the ride for the team. We went from our Brooklyn apartment to the awesome WeWork Labs coworking space in Manhattan. We added Daniel to the team, who has already been responsible for quite a few miracles in his few short months he’s been with us so far. We were the center of a NSFW joke on XKCD. We’ve also surpassed 75,000 registered users. But we’re not done yet. Not even close.

Up until now, we’ve been 100% bootstrapped. Back in late 2010, Dick and I quit our full time jobs, moved into a cheap apartment in Brooklyn, and went for broke. We started building Fitocracy as an extension of our own experiences as two out of shape nerds that managed to turn their addiction to video games into an addiction to fitness. At that time, we had no idea this would resonate with so many people and we are blessed that so many share in our vision.

Eventually the time came to look for ways to add some fuel to the fire. After considering our options, we decided an accelerator program was the right move and that Dave McClure’s 500startups was the perfect fit for us. Their relentless metrics-driven focus on design, data, and distribution was in line with how we wanted to drive Fitocracy’s development so when 500 offered us a spot in their accelerator, the decision was a no brainer.

We are all incredibly excited about the next phase of Fitocracy. Some really big new features are on the way and the next few months wil be focused exclusively on realizing more of the vision we’ve set for Fitocracy.
